Today Flipboard, Inc. announces its acquisition of Zite, a popular news reader application for iOS and Android, from CNN. By integrating Zite’s personalization technology and recommendation engine, Flipboard will further its mission to be the world’s best personal magazine. In addition to the acquisition, the two companies will embark on a multifaceted partnership, enabling CNN to expand its mobile reach to a new audience and take advantage of Flipboard’s technology and mobile sales strategy.
“More than a leader in mobile reading, Flipboard has created an incredibly immersive and valuable advertising experience,” said KC Estenson, SVP & GM of CNN Digital. “By tapping their expertise, we will create new revenue opportunities and expand CNN’s already massive mobile audience. With this deal CNN is invested in the long term success of Flipboard.”
“Today marks an important milestone for Flipboard and its readers. By bringing the Zite team and technology to Flipboard, we can deliver an even more personalized experience to every Flipboard reader. By partnering with CNN we can provide the world-class news our audience expects and expand our global coverage in a significant way,” said Mike McCue, CEO of Flipboard. “Together we will continue to pioneer how people read and share the content they care about and give Flipboard readers even more of what they want, all in one place.”
Beyond the acquisition, Flipboard and CNN have partnered to deliver CNN’s reporting, video and photography to the Flipboard audience around the world. Flipboard readers can now find CNN’s global news and information content in the News, Entertainment, Technology and Business sections on Flipboard.
As part of the CNN experience on Flipboard, the network has created custom magazines for three programs to enable users additional opportunities to dive deeper into the issues and topics featured on air:
• Fareed Zakaria’s GPS Daily: Explore global issues and engage with diverse and unique perspectives.
• The Lead with Jake Tapper: In depth news and analysis on today’s leads – from politics to money, sports and popular culture.
• John King’s Go “Inside Politics”: The biggest stories, sourced by the best reporters.
All three hosts sat down with Flipboard to talk about their approach to journalism and what has inspired them (for more read the blog post). Additional magazines from CNN shows and personalities will launch in the coming months. To find these magazines, search the magazine name on Flipboard or on the web.
